The MoveOn.org Voter Fund was an American 527 non-profit political organization affiliated with MoveOn.
The MoveOn.org Voter Fund was founded in 2003 to combat the re-election of president George W. Bush.[1] In 2003, It quickly raised some $15 million in small and large donations. These funds fuelled numerous multi-million dollar ad campaigns during the 2004 election cycle, criticizing Bush on key issues like the Iraq War and the loss of domestic manufacturing jobs during his term.[1:1]
In April 2004, however, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) notified MoveOn that its Voter Fund was likely violating numerous campaign finance laws.[2]
In December 2006, the FEC announced that the MoveOn.org Voter Fund "had violated election laws by acting as political action committees while not registering with or filing reports listing donors and contributions with the agency," resulting in a $150,000 penalty.[3]
The MoveOn.org Voter Fund was officially closed on June 20, 2008, after a dormant period.[4]
