Y Combinator (YC) is an American technology startup accelerator based in Mountain View, California.
Y Combinator was founded on March 11, 2005 by Paul Graham, Jessica Livingston, Robert Morris and Trevor Blackwell.[1] The original name for the company was "Cambridge Seed," but this was changed to Y Combinator by the time they announced it publicly a few days later.[2] Their first ever batch of startups was 9 companies large, including Loopt and Reddit.[3]
From 2005 to 2008, YC ran programs in both Cambridge, Massachusetts and Mountain View, California. In January 2009, Graham announced that only the California program would continue, as he and Livingston (his wife) were expecting their first child.[4]
In June 2012, General Catalyst joined the Y Combinator Start Fund, "the consortium of top investors who are backing every Y Combinator company."[5]
