Arthur Hays Sulzberger was an American newspaper publisher based in New York City. He served as the publisher of The New York Times from 1935-1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961-1968.[1]
He was the son-in-law of Adolph Ochs.[2] He was friend of Allen Dulles, director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).[3][4]
In 1917, Sulzberger married Iphigene Bertha Ochs, daughter of Adolph Ochs.[5] He succeeded Ochs as publisher of the New York Times in 1935.[1:1]
Sulzberger became a trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation in 1939.[6]
Sulzberger was an early supporter of the American Council for Judaism, an organization founded in 1942 in order to oppose Zionism. He reportedly instructed editors at the New York Times to "bury news of the Nazi genocide on the back pages, and to tone down or eliminate references to the fact that the victims were Jews," out of fear that "if the Times reported what was happening to the Jews in Europe, someone might accuse it of being a 'Jewish newspaper.'"[7]
Sulzberger was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAA&S) in 1950.[8]
Sulzberger was Chair of the Board of the Rockefeller Foundation by the time of his retirement in 1957.[9] He reportedly attended the St. Simons Island Conference held on February 15-17, 1957 by the Bilderberg Group.[10][11] Also in attendance were McGeorge Bundy, Henry Kissinger, Paul Nitze, David Rockefeller, and Dean Rusk.[10:1]
In 1961, Sulzberger was succeeded as publisher of the New York Times by his son-in-law, Orvil Dryfoos.[12]
