CosmosID Inc. is an American genomics company based in Germantown, Maryland.
CosmosID was founded in 2008 by Rita Colwell.[1]
On January 27, 2016, CosmosID announced it had secured $6 million in funding from the Applied Value Group.[2]
CosmosID was a "graduate" of the Spring 2019 startup program of Plug and Play.[3]
On January 22, 2020, staff at CosmosID downloaded the genetic sequence for SARS-CoV-2 and "analyzed it using the CosmosID metagenomics analysis platform."[4] The company launched a COVID-19 hub "for national and international SARS-CoV-2 variants surveillance,”[5] and began testing wastewater in March 2020.[6]
On September 16, 2020, CosmosID launched a wastewater testing service called H20Biome, partnering with local governments "in Florida, California, Ohio, Maryland, and across the US” to test wastewater for COVID-19 (as well as nasal swabs for students at universities).[7] The Maryland Department of the Environment issued a $502,980 contract to CosmosID for "COVID-19 Virus Sampling and Analysis in Wastewater" for the term of December 3, 2020 until November 29, 2021.[8]
On September 30, 2020, CosmosID was awarded a $246,270 grant from the Defense Health Agency (DHA) for a project titled "Field deployable handheld sequencing technology and bioinformatics system for rapid detection of pathogens, AMR, and virulence for clinical decision-making in a battlefield environment."[9] A second grant worth $1,099,829.44 was awarded for "Phase II" of the project on September 8, 2021.[10]
On October 5, 2022, CosmosID research analyst Barış Özdinç published an article describing the company's testing of wastewater samples for SARS-CoV-2.[11]
On October 11, 2023, Clinical Microbiomics announced it would merge with CosmosID.[12]
