The Infectious Disease Institute (IDI) is an African not-for-profit organization based in Kampala, Uganda. It operates within Makere University.
¶ History
IDI was conceived in 2001 by Merle Sande, Makerere University School of Medicine Dean Nelson Sewankambo and Pfizer CEO Hank McKinnell.[1] It was formally founded in 2002.[2]
Merle Sande founded the Academic Alliance for AIDS Care and Prevention in Africa (AA) in 2003.
Pfizer contributed early funding to build the facility and its programs with the Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation as an intermediary, as selected by Pfizer and the Academic Alliance Foundation.[3]
In 2005, the joint Makerere University-Johns Hopkins University (MU-JHU) laboratory moved to the IDI.
The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) recruited trainers from within their ranks and through their website. In 2008, the Academic Alliance Foundation was renamed the Accordia Global Health Foundation, and oversaw the “growth and development of IDI as a center of excellence.”
In October 2015, IDI was awarded a five-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to advance the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) in Uganda. This resulted in the establishment of the Biosafety and Biosecurity Association Uganda (BBAU).[4]
On November 17, 2015, the Ugandan Academy for Health Innovation and Impact was inaugurated at the IDI McKinnell Knowledge Centre at Makerere University as a partnership between Johnson & Johnson, Janssen, the Ministry of Health of Uganda and IDI.[4:1]
