Third Way is an American think tank based in Washington, D.C. According to its website, it "champions modern center-left ideas."[1] It is affiliated with Shield PAC[2] and Third Way Institute.[3]
Third Way was incorporated in October 2004[4] and formally founded in 2005 by Jonathan Cowan, Matt Bennett,[5] Nancy Hale,[6] and Jim Kessler.[7] The four had previously co-founded and co-led Americans for Gun Safety, and sought to apply their success in gun control activism to "help progressives retake the initiative and win the war of ideas." Third Way named Blanche Lincoln, Evan Bayh and Tom Carper as its founding honorary co-chairs.[8] On August 24, 2006, the Third Way Institute was incorporated in the State of Delaware.[9]
On October 19, 2009, a branch of the organization called the Third Way Policy Institute was incorporated in California.[10]
On June 4, 2014, Third Way hosted an event titled "The Future of Workforce Development." Participants in the accompanying roundtable discussion included vice president Joe Biden, Secretary of Labor Tom Perez, Doris Gonzalez of IBM, and Maureen Conway of the Aspen Institute, among others.[11]
Third Way hosted an event called "Catching the Cybercriminal: Reforming Global Law Enforcement" on November 18, 2019, alongside the NYU Center for Cybersecurity and the Journal of National Security Law & Policy. The event was funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.[12] Third Way subsequently launched its Cyber Enforcement Initiative (CEI), with an advisory board "comprised of former US government law enforcement, cybersecurity, and diplomatic officials, industry representatives, and experts" and further funding from the Hewlett Foundation.[13][14]
On January 28, 2020, Third Way published a memo authored by Jonathan Cowan urging Iowa Democrats not to caucus for Bernie Sanders in the 2020 United States presidential election, warning he was "the easiest target for [Donald Trump] to beat."[15]
In 2021, Third Way formed Shield PAC to protect Democrat politicians from accusations of being "woke socialists."[2:1]
On February 16, 2024, Third Way sent letters to the Secretaries of State of Arizona, Georgia, and Michigan, urging them to prevent American Values 2024 from collecting signatures on behalf of independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The letters were accompanied by a legal memo, dated February 5, 2024, from Jacquelyn Lopez of Elias Law Group, serving alongside Elizabeth Poston as legal representatives for Third Way.[16]
Third Way receives donations through its sister organization, Third Way Institute, which serves as its charitable arm.[3:1]
