The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is an American domestic law enforcement agency based in Washington, D.C.
One week after the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, letters containing anthrax spores were mailed to several news media offices and two U.S. Senators, Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy, killing 5 and infecting 17 others.[1] A lengthy and expensive investigation ensued, which the FBI codenamed “Amerithrax”.[2]
On July 26, 2006, then-director Robert Mueller established the Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate (WMDD).[3]
On November 8, 2018, three vials labelled “antibodies” were confiscated at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport from a foreign traveller who explained that he was delivering them to a colleague in the U.S. and that they were from a researcher in his home country. A report from the FBI suggested these likely contained samples of SARS and MERS.[3:1]
In July 2019, the New York Post reported that the FBI was looking into Ghislaine Maxwell's TerraMar Project following the arrest of Jeffrey Epstein.[4] Within weeks, “the charity blocked its public website and made it password-accessible,” deleted its Twitter account, and issued a message on its homepage stating that it had ceased operations.
On November 5, 2019, the FBI participated in a counter-terrorism exercise called Operation Blackout, simulating an attack on the 2020 United States presidential election. It was organized by Cybereason, and participants included the United States Department of Homeland Security, United States Secret Service, and the law firm Venable.[5]
In the lead up to the 2020 presidential election, the FBI warned Meta Platforms of "a potential Russian disinformation operation" around former vice president Joe Biden's family and Burisma Holdings.[6]
The FBI sponsored iGem 2021, hosted by the International Genetically Engineered Medicine Foundation.[7]
On May 24, 2023, the FBI co-published a report titled “People's Republic of China State-Sponsored Cyber Actor Living off the Land to Evade Detection” describing the actions of Volt Typhoon, co-published with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the National Security Agency (NSA), the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS), the New Zealand National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC-NZ) and the United Kingdom National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC-UK).[8]
The FBI is an agency under the United States Department of Justice.
The FBI is a member of the World Economic Forum's Partnership Against Cybercrime.[9]
