The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is a Canadian federal government research funding agency based in Ottawa, Ontario. It is part of the Government of Canada's Science Portfolio overseen by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED).
NSERC was among the primary agencies responsible for Canada's response to the declared COVID-19 pandemic.[1]
¶ History
On May 15, 2020, the Government of Canada announced the Canada Research Continuity Emergency Fund (CRCEF), "a temporary program" which was "established to help sustain the research enterprise at Canadian universities and affiliated health research institutions affected by the COVID-19 pandemic." CRCEF was administered by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) on behalf of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), SSHRC and NSERC.[2]
In March 2021, CIHR announced a grant funding opportunity called "Encouraging vaccine confidence in Canada" to be co-administered with NSERC and SSHRC. The grant was intended to fund projects to promote COVID-19 vaccines to target populations, such as pregnant women, children, racial minorities and religious groups.[3] In July 2021, the program announced a total of $2.26 million in awards to 48 recipients.[4]
