Dr. Daniel Yoshio Nagase is a Canadian emergency and family practice physician.[1][2] He practiced medicine in British Columbia and Alberta until his suspension in 2021. He has two children with his ex-wife, who is a registered nurse.[3]
Nagase attended Dalhousie University, where he learned that sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in North America was primarily associated with poverty, smokers in the household and recent vaccination.[4] He also studied cell biology and physiology at McGill University.[5][6][7]
Nagase graduated with his Doctor of Medicine from Dalhousie in 2004, and received additional certifications from the College of Family Physicians of Canada and Medical Council of Canada.[8][2:1][9] He completed post-graduate training from 2006-2008 at the University of Ottawa, registering with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario on July 18, 2006. His registration expired June 30, 2008.[10]
Nagase then began working as an emergency room doctor.[11] He had locum privileges at Squamish General Hospital, where he reportedly was subject to disciplinary action.[12][13]
In May 2010, he began working at the South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver, British Columbia.[12:1] On December 14, 2010, an incident occurred resulting in a "somewhat heated exchange within the emergency ward" at SOGH between Nagase and the head nurse, "all within the earshot of patients."[12:2] On December 17, 2010, Nagase and his superiors agreed that he would resign from his position effective February 16, 2011.
In or around 2012, Nagase worked at Ridge Meadows Hospital in Maple Ridge, BC.[14]
In 2015, Nagase went on to practice in rural, under-served communities in Alberta.[15] The earliest record of Nagase's registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta is June 30, 2015.[9:1]
On August 31, 2015, Nagase attended a hearing as plaintiff in a case he brought against Drs. Peter Entwistle and Jonathan Slater, South Okanagan General Hospital, and the Interior Health Authority on the grounds of "defamation, interference with contractual relations and breach of his privacy."
On September 15, 2015, Justice Gordon Weatherill dismissed Nagase's defamation charge.[12:3] Nagase appealed the decision, appearing in court on May 10, 2016, but this was also dismissed in a June 15, 2016 decision.[16]
Nagase was employed as an emergency physician at Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre.[17] Nagase later observed that based on his experience in 2020, "neglect appeared to harm as many or more elderly than COVID ever did." He also described an "increase in substance abuse and suicidality" among young people presenting to the ER, especially as the lockdown measures progressed.[18]
On September 11, 2021, Nagase treated several elderly patients diagnosed with "COVID-19 pneumonia" using a combination of ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine, vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, along with salbutamol, fluticasone, azithromycin, diuretics and "nebulized medication."[11:1][15:1] According to Nagase, "all three patients wanted to try ivermectin."[15:2] Nagase was denied a prescription from the pharmacy at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. He was then contacted by Dr. Gerald Lazarenko, the provincial medical director for pharmacy services under Alberta Health Services, who “insisted that ivermectin had no place in the treatment of COVID.” Nagase was able to acquire ivermectin from an agricultural supply by "a rogue pharmacist," who "double-checked and confirmed the product was the exact same as that used for humans and Nagase then provided the appropriate dose to his patients according to their weight."[17:1][15:3]
Within hours, Nagase received a call from Dr. Jennifer Bestard, the central zone medical director, informing him he was “forbidden from giving ivermectin to patients.”[15:4]
All three patients were reportedly in recovery within 18 hours, including a noticeable improvement in their pneumonia symptoms, and left within a week.
According to Nagase, Jennifer Starr of Alberta Health Services (AHS) filed a complaint with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) for his use of "a medication [he] was not supposed to use" in the treatment of COVID-19. On September 12, Bestard called Nagase's hospital and told him with 15 minutes' notice that his emergency room privileges were suspended for the remainder of 2021.[15:5]
Nagase was assigned lawyers by the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), including Karen Pirie of Gowling WLG.[19] Nagase asked Pirie to pursue a claim that the CPSA violated his human rights as he had been effectively prohibited from practicing medicine, which she refused to do.
He then complained directly to the college, who told him he had violated their policy on use of ivermectin. The policy in question was published shortly after Nagase's successful treatment of his patients, first appearing online on October 7, 2021.[20][21] In its statements to the press, AHS said that it had followed the results of a review conducted by the AHS COVID-19 Scientific Advisory Group which found "no evidence that ivermectin in either human or animal formulation is safe or beneficial when used to prevent or treat COVID-19."[17:2][22]
Nagase also held a license to practice in British Columbia,[2:2] where the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia had also issued their own similar policy on ivermectin on October 1, 2021.[23]
Shortly after having his hospital privileges suspended, Nagase's wife began the process of divorcing him.[3:1]
On October 1, 2021, Nagase delivered a speech during an event held outside the Vancouver Art Gallery by Common Ground marking the 75th anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials during which he described the incident. Brian Peckford wrote about the speech on his blog, sharing a video of the speech several days later.[17:3][24] Dr. Cian Hackett filed a complaint against Nagase with the CPSA following his speech, as did Jacqueline Wolf on the grounds that he administered medications that were “potentially unsafe / have little to no evidence to their efficacy.”[25] Wolf cited a separate complaint made by an anonymous nurse, which led Nagase to file his own complaint with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta.
On October 7, 2021, Alberta Health Services issued a statement accusing Nagase of spreading "misinformation about COVID-19 treatment."[26]
On November 9, 2021, Nagase participated in an interview with Noble Savages alongside Dr. Robert Malone.[27] Nagase expressed concern about the possibility of reverse transcriptase and cancer associated with COVID-19 vaccines. Malone, on the other hand, cautioned against speculation around reverse transcriptase and integration of the mRNA material into the human genome, stating that the 'Freedom Community' was "under intense pressure... we have to be super careful about our messaging and what we're stating." Nagase later expressed skepticism and disappointment about Malone's priorities while recounting this incident.[28]
On November 10, 2021, Supreme Court of British Columbia Master Grant Taylor issued an order preventing Nagase from communicating with his children, who were aged 7 and 9 at the time, for one year. According to Nagase, this was done because of his "estranged wife's claim" that he was a danger to his children due to his "stance on the dangers of the experimental COVID injections," as well as her allegation that Nagase planned to kidnap his children because he owned "a travel trailer and rural property."[29]
On November 11, 2021, Nagase participated in a rally in North Vancouver, British Columbia outside the local Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment, during which he and Mel Bruchet raised awareness over an alleged rise in stillbirths associated with COVID-19 vaccines.[30] The pair spoke with RCMP officers and sought to file a criminal complaint against the executive membership of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC), "alleging conflicts of interest influencing their policies, decisions and statements made to the people of British Columbia."[31][32]
On November 13, 2021, Nagase spoke at a rally in Kelowna, British Columbia.[33]
On November 23, 2021, Vancouver Coastal Health issued a series of statements on Twitter dismissing the claims of stillbirths as "rumours and disinformation."[34]
Nagase was at Bruchet's house recording an interview with the Western Standard on December 8, 2021 when six RCMP officers and a mental health nurse arrived and arrested Bruchet.[35] On December 9, 2021, Nagase delivered a speech at the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia warning of the risk of adverse events associated with COVID-19 vaccines.[11:2][1:1][36]
Nagase and the Peoples of the Salmon hosted a rally in support of Bruchet on December 12, 2021, which also featured Dr. Charles Hoffe, Stephen Malthouse, Svetlana Rikoff and David Quinn as speakers.[37][38]
As of partway through December 2021, Nagase's physician profile on the CPSA website included a long list of "Conditions on Practice Permit."[39] This included being "restricted from providing care to patients diagnosed with COVID-19 or suspected of having COVID-19," as well as mandatory disclaimers he must include whenever publicly discussing COVID-19 vaccine or ivermectin. He was also "restricted from issuing COVID-19 vaccine exemption letters" and "mask exemption letters," as well as "from prescribing and/or administering, in any manner, the prescription medication ivermectin, including human and/or veterinary versions of ivermectin." Of particular note is that he was "required by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta to advise you that the accepted view of the medical profession is that vaccinations have been shown statistically to save lives and to reduce the severity of COVID-19 symptoms. The accepted view of the medical profession is that eligible individuals should participate in a vaccination program unless for a valid religious or medical reason they cannot be vaccinated."
On January 3, 2022, Nagase appeared alongside Bruchet as a guest in a Children's Health Defense Canada video discussing Bruchet's arrest,[40] and a second such appearance on the Essential Talks podcast.[41]
On January 22, 2022, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia changed Nagase's registration status from "active" to "out of province."[42] His intention was to allow his registration to expire, rather than renew it. According to Nasage, the college "sent him a letter saying he would face a penalty of $100 for every month his licence was inactive unless he resigned."[11:3] As of June 27, 2022, he is officially listed as "resigned."[43] Similarly, on February 15, 2022, Nagase's registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta was changed to "inactive" due to "No RIF and Non-payment."[44]
On February 2, 2022, Nagase went to the North Vancouver Provincial Court along with Popois (leader of the Peoples of the Salmon) and an unnamed “assistant” to “file aggravated assault charges” against the staff of the psychiatric facility where Bruchet was kept. The trio refused to rise for Judge Joanne Challenger, citing “Sovereign Common Law.” Nagase was reportedly ordered to leave the court, and when he declined, was forcibly detained, followed by Popois. A press release from the Peoples of the Salmon describe Nagase’s treatment as violent and unwarranted. The two men were searched, held for several hours, and then released without charge.[45]
On September 29, 2022, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) issued a citation against Nagase in response to his statements “on or about” December 9, 2021 related to ivermectin and COVID-19 vaccines.[46] The CPSBC noted that “at least some of these public statements” were made while “appearing in front of effigies of political figures who were hung from nooses."[1:2] The effigies were of Premier John Horgan, Health Minister Adrian Dix and Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth.[47] He was accused of contravening "standards imposed under the Health Professions Act, including but not limited to the Canadian Medical Association's Code of Ethics and Professionalism."[36:1]
Nagase agreed to a hearing February 21-24, 2023 and submitted evidence to justify his public statements. However, the CPSBC asked for an adjournment, which Nagase rejected.[11:4] The CPSBC is reportedly attempting to reschedule the hearing.
On February 4, 2023, Nagase spoke at the Victoria Edelweiss Club for an event called "What's Up, Doc?"[48]
On February 10, 2023, Nagase published an article criticizing Trevor Corneil of the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia (UBC).[49]
On March 24, 2023, Nagase published an article outlining several contradictions in Dr. Robert Malone's approach to "speaking out" against COVID-19 vaccines, speculating that he may be a double or triple agent working to strategically shape the narrative in favour of the future use of mRNA vaccine technology.[50]
On March 26, 2023, Nagase's children told him that they had been injected with "the Covid mRNA experiment" by their mother, Nagase's ex-wife.[3:2] His 8-year-old son told Nagase via Facebook Messenger that "he didn't like it."[29:1]
On May 4, 2023, Nagase published an article describing the death of a patient diagnosed with COVID-19. He accused multiple doctors at the University of Alberta Hospital of homicide, including Craig Domke, Alistair Eksteen, Michael Jacka, Olivia Friesen and Brittany Kula.[3:3]
On May 12, 2023, Nagase filed a "handwritten" notice of civil claim against the Supreme Court of British Columbia and its Master, Grant Taylor.[51][29:2] He alleged that Grant "wrote an order barring Nagase from any contact" with his two children between November 2021 and November 2022, during which time they received "a prima facie medical experiment commonly known as COVID-19 vaccination."[52] Nagase is seeking $66 million in damages.[53] Nagase identified the jurisdiction of his claim as "Maritime Law".
Nagase testified to the National Citizens Inquiry on May 19, 2023.[11:5] He described the case of a patient treated by Dr. John Peachell at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital who died after being given the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.[54]
Nagase amended his filing against the Supreme Court of British Columbia and Grant Taylor of June 6, 2023.[29:3] Michael Kleisinger, a lawyer representing the Ministry of Attorney General, sent Nagase a letter that same day notifying him that he felt his suit was "misguided" and threatened the proper administration of justice, and that he would move to have the court strike the application. Furthermore, he advised Nagase "seek legal advice regarding this letter," the remedies described within, and "[his] action generally."[55] Nagase replied by e-mail to reject Kleisinger's advice, to which Kleisinger reiterated his advice that Nagase should "seek legal advice from a practising lawyer."[29:4]
On June 13, 2023, Nagase criticized the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) for failing to assist him in his legal efforts.[19:1] That same day, Patrick Heinsen of law firm Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) sent Nagase a letter on behalf of Alberta Health Services demanding he remove his Substack articles titled "A deadly day in the ER: My thoughts on a patient’s deadly ER visit" and "The Difference Between Negligence and Homicide: a process in thought".[56] AHS legal counsel Sarah Louw was also copied on the e-mail.[57]
On June 23, 2023, Kleisinger filed a Notice of Application to strike Nagase's civil complaint, and schedule a hearing for July 7.[53:1] The hearing was attended by a group of disruptive supporters of Nagase.[52:1] Justice Margot Fleming suggested rescheduling the hearing for a later date in a smaller courtroom.
Nagase publishes a series on Substack called "Logical Surprises".[58]
