Palantir Technologies is an American software company based in Denver, Colorado.
Palantir was founded in May 2003 by Peter Thiel.[1]
In March 2018, Palantir was awarded a contract from the United States Department of Defense to provide software to the United States Army in partnership with Raytheon.[2] Later that month, whistleblower Christopher Wylie testified that Palantir worked with Cambridge Analytica to analyze data harvested from Facebook profiles.[3]
Palantir acquired Synapse Technology in 2020.[4]
Following the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, Palantir worked with British health officials and Google to "track the progress of the Covid-19 outbreak."[5]
Palantir worked with United States government health officials to track the production and distribution of future COVID-19 vaccine candidates using a software system called Tiberius. The project granted Palantir access to sensitive health information in the name of identifying "high-priority populations at highest risk of infection."[5:1] Tiberius uses the same software that manages HHS Protect for the United States Department of Health and Human Services, which gathers COVID-19-related information from "more than 225 data sets, including demographic statistics, community-based tests, and a wide range of state-provided data."[6]
In July 2020, Elizabeth Warren and several Democrat and Republican colleagues warned that Palantir’s massive stores of data “could be used by other federal agencies in unexpected, unregulated, and potentially harmful ways, such as in the law and immigration enforcement context.”[7][8]
On October 4, 2021, Palantir announced that the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) had awarded the company a contract to continue its existing data services for the National COVID Cohort Collaborative. NCATS also awarded a second contract to continue providing software for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the United States President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), at a total value of $60 million.[9]
Palantir is a member organization of:
Palantir is also a partner of the National COVID Cohort Collaborative,[9:1] the NobleReach Foundation[15] and the World Economic Forum (WEF).[16] The company is an investor in Roivant Sciences.[17]
