The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) is an American 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, California. It is the host of Wikipedia.[1]
The domain name "wikimedia.org" was registered on March 16, 2003.[2]
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales announced the launch of the Wikimedia Foundation on June 20, 2003. The foundation assumed control of Wikipedia, its predecessor, Nupedia, and other assets previously owned by Bomis.[3]
On November 21, 2006, the Wikimedia Foundation received 681 shares of Google stock.[4][5]
In January 2016, WMF announced the creation of the Wikimedia Endowment, a $100 million fund managed by the Tides Foundation.[6]
